Throughout this past week, people have gathered to protest the death of George Floyd and other Black individuals, as well as the justice system in the United States.

While riots and looting have occurred, protesters have noted that the protests started off and were meant to be peaceful throughout the demonstrations.

Protests from May 31 and June 1 in Portland,Oregon, with hundreds standing together to support Black Lives Matter. Photos by Dylan De Baldo.

"The Portland protests were filled with emotion. Sadness, anger, and betrayal. The marches each day started peaceful but tension continued to rise as we marched from E. Portland to downtown at the Justice Department. From what I can tell Portland had some lesser intense events, but that still does not excuse the force from the police we faced some days even after the officers kneeled [sic] along side us only to use force 30 minutes later. Just as our organizers stated, we are in the midst of a second civil rights movement." -Dylan De Baldo, June 2

"What I've noticed is that history is literally repeating itself word for word. The government is pushing peaceful protesters to become violent and harmful. And the media only shows how violent the protesters are but never show how the police are pushing protesters to be violent or how the police themselves are the ones being violent." -Alex Torres, June 2

Protests have also been happening all over Long Island. Towns such as Brentwood, Huntington, Merrick and Patchogue have had their own form of demonstrations. While many residents of Merrick and some in Huntington have expressed their disapproval of the protests, demonstrators still gathered and marched.

"Today's protest in Huntington was an inspiring, but above all a PEACEFUL demonstration, and emphasized the strength that exists when we come together as human beings." -Nicole Kelly, June 3

Towns in Upstate New York have also had protests. The City of Ithaca, located in Western New York, had a protest on June 3, where demonstrators marched down the Ithaca Commons and to the police department.

As the protests continue throughout the country, donations to the George Floyd Memorial Fund have increased tremendously. As of June 4, the campaign has received over $12.9 million, surpassing its original goal of $1.5 million.

Over the next couple of days, more protests are planned to be held to support the Black Lives Matter movement and to bring awareness to police brutality in the United States.

Anyone who plans on protesting is advised to be prepared with supplies such as water, snacks, and a mask. Protesters are also advised to have emergency contacts ready, just in case. And most importantly, to stay safe. For more information, click here.

"A lot of people showed up, and me being a 17-year-old African American young woman, protesting for the first time in my life made me feel proud of myself and also made me feel proud of other people that were there. There is so much hatred, injustice, inequality, racism; so much more much more in this world. My question is when is it going to end? ... I just hope and pray that the President, the police, and other government official get our message around the world, because enough is enough." -Tyler Browne, June 5
